Best Toddler Travel Car Seats: Lightweight Options for Trips

Traveling with a toddler is much easier when the car seat you bring is safe for your child but light enough to carry through an airport, install in a rental car, and move between hotels, taxis and vacation destinations.

We have traveled extensively with our kids and eventually decided that having a separate lightweight car seat specifically for travel made life much easier. Instead of repeatedly uninstalling our bulky everyday seats, we could grab the travel seat and go.

This guide covers the toddler travel car seats and portable alternatives we have considered, including the Cosco Scenera Next, Evenflo Tribute LX, RideSafer travel vest and several booster options for older children. Because car seat models and specifications change, always verify the current manufacturer's height, weight and usage limits before buying or using any restraint.

What Should You Look for in a Toddler Travel Car Seat?

For us, portability matters a lot, but it is not the only consideration. A travel car seat still needs to fit your particular child correctly and be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

NHTSA recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible, until they reach the top rear-facing height or weight limit allowed by their particular seat. Once a child outgrows those limits, the next step is generally a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether.

When comparing travel seats, I would look at:

Child fit: Make sure your child is within the seat's current height and weight limits.
Weight of the seat: Every extra pound matters when you are moving through an airport with a toddler and luggage.
Ease of installation: Practice before your trip so you are comfortable installing the seat in an unfamiliar vehicle.
Airline use: If you plan to use the seat on an airplane, confirm that your specific model is certified for aircraft use.
Width: Narrower seats can be helpful in rental cars and when traveling with multiple passengers.
How long your child can use it: A slightly larger seat may make sense if it gives your toddler more room to grow.

Cosco Scenera Next: Our Favorite Lightweight Toddler Travel Seat

Cosco Scenera Next toddler travel car seat — We have traveled extensively with a lightweight Cosco car seat.

The Cosco Scenera Next has been our personal favorite toddler travel car seat. We bought it specifically for travel because it was lightweight, inexpensive compared with our everyday car seats, and easy for us to move through airports and install at our destination.

One of the biggest reasons I liked having a separate travel seat was that I did not have to uninstall our regular car seat at home every time we took a trip. Our everyday seat stayed in place, while the lighter travel seat stayed with our luggage and other travel gear.

I also liked that I could fit the seat into the basket of my UPPAbaby Vista. That made getting through the airport much easier because I was not carrying the toddler, luggage and car seat separately.

Product availability and specifications for the Scenera line have changed over time, so check the current Amazon listing and manufacturer information before purchasing to confirm that the particular seat being sold is appropriate for your child.

Evenflo Tribute LX

The Evenflo Tribute LX is another lightweight convertible seat worth considering for travel.

I found the Tribute a little bulkier than the Cosco Scenera Next, which is why Cosco was our first choice. However, it still makes sense as an inexpensive dedicated travel seat for families who do not want to repeatedly uninstall their primary car seat.

The big advantage of this type of seat is simplicity: it is a conventional harnessed car seat, but light enough that traveling with it is much more realistic than hauling one of the very heavy convertible seats many families use at home.

RideSafer Travel Vest for Older Toddlers and Young Children

The RideSafer travel vest is a very different type of child restraint. Instead of carrying a traditional car seat, the child wears a travel vest that helps position the vehicle seat belt correctly.

This can be appealing for families traveling frequently by taxi, rideshare or rental car because it takes up dramatically less room than a traditional car seat.

However, I would not choose a vest simply because a child has reached a certain birthday. Use it only when your child meets the current manufacturer's age, size and usage requirements and when it is appropriate for the vehicle and trip.

What About Portable Booster Seats?

Booster seats are generally for older children who have outgrown a forward-facing harness and are developmentally able to sit correctly in a booster for the entire ride. They are not a substitute for a harnessed toddler seat simply because they are easier to pack.

For older children who are ready for a booster, compact travel options can be extremely convenient.

MiFold Travel Booster

The MiFold travel booster is one of the smallest travel booster options we have used. Instead of lifting the child up like a traditional booster, it positions the vehicle seat belt lower across the child's body.

The current MiFold Comfort is intended for children age 4 and older who meet its stated height and weight requirements, so this is an option for older children rather than most toddlers.

Cosco Topside Backless Booster

The Cosco Topside backless booster is a more traditional lightweight booster option. Again, this is for children who are actually ready for booster-seat use, not younger toddlers who still need a harnessed car seat.

BubbleBum Inflatable Booster

The BubbleBum inflatable booster is another compact option families may consider for older children because it packs much smaller than a traditional booster.

As with any booster, check the current manufacturer requirements and make sure your child can sit correctly throughout the ride.

Should You Bring a Toddler Car Seat on the Airplane?

For our family, bringing the car seat onto the airplane was one of the best toddler-travel decisions we made.

Our son was already accustomed to being buckled into a car seat. Once we started using his car seat on flights, he seemed to understand that he was supposed to stay seated just as he would in the car. That made a huge difference compared with having a toddler who constantly wanted to get into the aisle and visit everyone around us.

The FAA strongly recommends using an approved child restraint system or other approved restraint for children based on their size. If you plan to use your car seat on the plane, look for the aircraft-use certification on your specific seat before traveling.

How Do You Know Whether a Car Seat Is Approved for Airplane Use?

FAA approved car seat label — Check the label on your particular car seat before bringing it onboard.

Do not assume that every car seat can be used on an airplane. Check the label on the restraint itself.

The FAA says an aircraft-approved car seat should have the required certification wording indicating that the restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.

That label is more important than an old blog post or retailer description because car-seat models can be updated over time.

Keeping a Toddler Entertained While Using a Car Seat on the Plane

A car seat can help keep a toddler comfortably contained, but you still need something for them to do during the flight.

Toddler Travel Car Seat Tips

Use Your Stroller as a Car Seat Carrier

If your travel car seat fits safely in your stroller basket, this can save you from carrying it through the airport.

This was one reason I liked traveling with our full-size stroller. I could put the lightweight car seat in the basket, keep my hands free, and still use the stroller for my child when necessary.

Consider a Car Seat Strap for Rolling Luggage

If you are not bringing a stroller, a car seat luggage strap can make it easier to move a compatible seat through the airport by attaching it to rolling luggage.

Always follow the strap and car seat manufacturer's instructions, particularly regarding whether a child may be seated in the car seat while it is being transported.

Practice the Installation Before Your Trip

Do not wait until you are standing beside a rental car with a tired toddler to learn how to install a travel seat.

Practice with the seat before leaving home and read both the car-seat manual and the vehicle owner's manual. Being confident with the installation is especially important when you may be switching between multiple vehicles during one trip.

Keep a Dedicated Car Seat for Travel

For us, a separate travel car seat was worth the cost. Our regular car seats remained installed at home and we did not have to worry about repeatedly removing and reinstalling them.

A dedicated travel seat also meant we could prioritize lightweight portability rather than choosing the same features we wanted in an everyday car seat.

Should You Rent a Toddler Car Seat at Your Destination?

We generally prefer bringing our own car seat when we know we will be using a car frequently.

The biggest advantage is knowing the seat's history, knowing that it fits our child, and already being comfortable with its installation. With a rental seat, you may not know which model will be available until you arrive.

That said, there are trips where renting equipment can make sense. If you are traveling somewhere without a car for most of the trip and only need a restraint briefly, compare the inconvenience of carrying your own seat with the cost and availability of a rental.

Using Toddler Car Seats in Taxis and Rental Cars

Taxis and rental cars are one of the main reasons we like traveling with a lightweight seat. A compact car seat is easier to install and remove when you will not be using the same vehicle for the entire vacation.

Do not assume that local exemptions for taxis mean a child is safest riding without a restraint. Laws vary by location, and legal requirements are not necessarily the same as best safety practice.

If we know we will be taking several car rides, I would rather have a restraint we already know how to use.

Our Bottom Line

For our family, a lightweight dedicated travel car seat made vacations significantly easier. The Cosco Scenera Next was our favorite because we could carry it easily, use it on flights when appropriate, install it in rental vehicles, and avoid disturbing the expensive car seats we kept installed at home.

The best option for your family depends on your child's current size and stage. Younger toddlers generally need a harnessed convertible seat, while travel vests and boosters become options later when a child meets their specific requirements.

Whichever restraint you choose, check the current manufacturer's limits, practice using it before the trip, and confirm aircraft approval on the actual seat if you intend to use it during a flight.
